One of my great delights in life is anything to do with history, because I love stories, especially those behind people and events. It was my favourite subject in high school, although I do remember being quite offended when I realized I was expected to remember who did what, when and where, rather than just enjoy the story. So it's no surprise that I enjoy the occasional epic historical movie. Recently I watched one called The Four Feathers. Let me tell you the part that impacted me, without giving away too much of the plot. The movie is set in 1898 during a time when England occupied the Sudan. Harry, once a reluctant and now disgraced soldier, travels to the Sudan as a civilian and becomes embroiled in the violence of the time. At one point, he finds himself stranded in the vastness of the desert, parched and dying. Miraculously, in that world where life seems to be worth less than nothing, someone passes his way, and doesn't simply pass, he stops to help. This good Samaritan is an enormous black slave, Abu, who has incredible compassion and begins to look out for Harry, even to the point of riskingContinue reading →

They were sitting in the row in front of me in church, a couple with their two little children. I was drawn to the calm serenity of the papa as his lap became the resting place for his little son. Totally at peace, the boy reclined, gazing up into his papa?s face. Delighting in each other, they shared smiles as the child reached out and stroked his father?s face. For some time they continued like this, until the little one became restless and began to wriggle in dad?s lap, even using his father?s tie to steady his progress as he stood up on wobbly legs. The patient papa responded with gentle strength and accommodated the knees and elbows of his baby, until the little one tried to leave the stable confines of papa?s lap, and loudly expressed his displeasure as firmly, but kindly, papa limited his son?s movements. Pressing his face close to the baby?s ear, papa whispered his love until the cries subsided and peace was restored in the lap. As I watched, transfixed by the drama unfolding, suddenly a timeless truth invaded my thoughts. When we belong to Him - rest, struggle, adoration, comfort, correction, encouragement and disciplineContinue reading →
